Jumble o' Thoughts & Random Pic Thursday

  • It's hard to believe that it's already September. This year seems to have flown by.
  • School starts for me tomorrow. I'm not thrilled about going back, BUT it's my LAST class. For ever.and.ever. (OK -- maybe not EVER -- especially if I take a cooking class like I want to.) But, you catch my drift.
  • I *just* figured out that there's a Hobby Lobby within an hour or so of my house. I'll be making a pilgrimage there shortly.
  • Thanks to Tropical Storm Irene, a lot of my friends and family in western Massachusetts are under water, have lost power, etc... They're in my thoughts and here's hoping things get back to "normal" soon.
  • Words with Friends is on the verge of taking over my life. Step.away.from.the.iPhone/computer.
  • I'm looking forward to October 6th. Not only is it my mom's birthday, but she'll be here visiting me AND it's the first game of the season for the Bruins and the Championship banner will be hoisted to the rafters in the Garden.
  • I'm really liking this whole "50 States? 50 Blogs" thing. I've had fun finding blogs for the next few states. Stay tuned -- I've got some cool ones!
  • It's hard to believe that the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is coming up. Will you be doing anything to remember it? A neighboring town is having a gathering/remembrance ceremony in its downtown, which I'd consider attending, but I have class that day.

  • Red Sox/Yankees games are exhausting but a MUST watch.
Random Photo Thursday

These two party animals? My great aunt T. and my great uncle A. (T. is my Dad's Mom's sister. Got that?) T. and A. are pretty much infamous in our family. If you look closely, you'll see a Winston in T.'s hand and a G and T (Gin and Tonic). These were here signature "accessories." A. is missing his pipe in this picture, but he's got the trademark bowtie and drink in his hand. (His drink of choice might have been G and T, also, but I'll have to consult with family on that one.) T. and A. owned a "camp" (basically a cabin on a river) in a nearby town and when my Dad and his siblings were little, they'd spend lots of time in the summer with them. When they reminisce, they have some funny stories to tell.

I was lucky enough to spend a week (or two?) with T. and A. when I was younger. They had sold the camp long ago, but their house had an inground pool, which was quite a treat. I learned how to play A LOT of card games, found out where to buy the cheapest booze and cartons of cigarettes in tax-free New Hampshire, was only allowed three minute showers, taught not to flush if it wasn't "necessary", and heard tales of their travels to Cuba, China, and other exotic places. Oh, and what 5th grader doesn't love Coquille St. Jacques (or has ever heard of it or can spell it???)

They were quite a pair. I miss them...and their kooky Christmas gifts. (Square egg maker anyone?)

83.33333333% Done -- Officially!

Yes, that's right folks -- I've completed 10 out of 12 classes and I'm 83.333333333% done towards earning my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. ::phew::

I realize that others have accomplished much greater educational achievements than I, but this is my story and only that.

It's been a long road to get here. To say I've been interested in pursuing several fields/careers would be an understatement. The first "job" I remember wanting to have was cruise director. Take a wild guess why.

Yes, the wonderful 80's television show, "The Love Boat." Every Saturday night I'd marvel at Julie McCoy and how perky she was and the fact that she got to meet all of these fun new people and travel to fun new places. It was only later in life when I went on a real cruise that I realized that not all passengers are B-Movie/TV stars and that the cruise director lives in a tiny little room at the bottom of the boat. No thanks.

Shortly thereafter I wanted to be a hairdresser. I can barely cut a straight line on paper. Enough said.

Then it was marine biologist. I can't really pinpoint where this came from. Probably a trip to the aquarium. It was a passing fancy.

In junior high, I traveled from Boston to Washington, DC with my dad. I was enchanted by the hub of the government and the U.S. itself. I knew D.C. was the place I wanted to be. I figured that while Rome do as the Romans do, or while in D.C. does as the District of Columbians do -- work in a government-related job. I visited American University in Washington D.C., nestled in among embassies from such far away lands as China, Guatamala, and Malta. The physical building themselves and their grounds are beautiful and again, I was enamored. Working at an embassy sounded like a good idea -- majoring in International Studies might get me there. (Meanwhile, no actual concrete idea of WHAT I'd do at an embassy.)

After a year at American I started to realize that politics and government weren't my bag. Uh oh.

Panic set in. Time to start randomly grasping at careers I've never considered before. Like...nutritionist! I took a nutrition class and thought, "OK -- this isn't bad." I took a "real" biology class (required for the nutrition field and not the biology for non-science majors.") Uh oh again.

I left American after two years not having any real idea of what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to be back in Boston, so I took my old part-time job from high school back and took two part-time classes at Northeastern University. Let the randomness begin again -- I took juvenile justice and a child development class.

Guess what? I LIKED these classes. I was interested in the material. I investigated Northeastern and found that they had a Human Services major. (I know, I know -- you're thinking Human Resources. No -- completely different.) Human Services is an interdisciplinary major from the Education, Sociology, and Psychology departments. I had finally found my niche. I can't really describe why it was "me." It was all about people and their lives -- how they live them, how they're educated, why they do what they do.

I interned at many different types of places (special education classrooms, hospital, and a non-profit that educates parents of children with disabilities about special education laws.) I eventually took an administrative position at said non-profit and worked there for over five years. While I learned a lot, I knew there was more out there for me.

On a whim I applied for a job at my current place of employment (creator of aggregated research databases). I got it. Not only had I made a switch from the non-profit to the for-profit world, but I was exposed to a number of new careers -- sales, technology, product management, and library science.

Most kids rebel against their parents and what their parents want them to be and try not to follow in their footsteps. At this point in my career, an internal voice was saying, "Um, KT? Your dad's a librarian. You shouldn't be a librarian." Completely irrational, since this job made my dad very happy.

I'll wrap this up by saying that with encouragement from friends, co-workers, yes, grudgingly, my dad, I figured library science might be my holy grail of careers. I stepped out of my very comfortable zone and after 12 years of being out of school, I started my Master's in Library and Information Science. As soon as I took my first class, I knew it was the place for me. The past 2 1/2 years have been difficult, balancing work, family, and school, but looking back, I wouldn't do it any differently. (Except maybe try to avoid staying up until 2AM cutting finger puppets out of felt with cuticle scissors.)

Two more classes. Seven more months. The road to get here was windy, scary, and uncertain at times, but I can see the end -- or is it the beginning?

Pet Peeves du Jour

  1. When a fellow student sits in the first row and spends the ENTIRE three hours of class flicking her ponytail back and forth. (Sit in the back row if you want to do that!)
  2. When a fellow student has a running dialogue going with herself throughout the ENTIRE three hours of class...out loud. (Keep it to yourself!)
  3. When the vending machine is SOLD OUT of everything you choose.
  4. When someone hits your car...and doesn't leave a note...and the driver's side door won't open more than a foot.
  5. When you have to wait over 1/2 hour to see a doctor.
Yes, I realize that things could be a lot worse in life, but these are what they are...pet peeves.

Randomness

  1. I am two days away from my 39th birthday. My LAST birthday in the 30's. Ugh. However, I will be posting my "40 Before 41" list, which I'm eager to get started on!
  2. If it snows anymore here, I'll need to snoeshow to work.
  3. Started my class last week and I'm liking it and my professor. I have to design a database and I've chose to design one to organize data from John's songbooks.
  4. I had a very nice pre-birthday celebration tonight with John & my stepdaughter, G. They made me pork chops with cream of mushroom soup gravy, rice, and applesauce. My favorite childhood meal. G. also gave me a beautiful card and a "K" charm and a pink "K."
  5. I've decided that if it's humor you're looking for in fiction, then British authors are the way to go. They're just funnier. Period.

This & That

Random ramblings --
  • School is OVER for the semester!!! I finished yesterday and I am so relieved. Taking two classes is HARD when working full-time.
  • I'm allowing myself to relax tonight and then tomorrow the cleaning/prep for Christmas MUST start!
  • I've already done a bunch of Christmas shopping -- most of it online.
  • I'm excited to go to my friend Nancy's annual holiday party tomorrow. (And excited to make gingerbread to bring. Yum.)
  • For the first time in about 15 years I'll be with my parents on Christmas. That's all I need for a gift.
  • I have been trying different flavors of Woodchuck Hard Cider and I'm loving the 802 flavor. (John's loving the Raspberry.)
  • I'm also loving a new TV show on the Discovery Channel -- Brew Masters. Why you ask?
    • a) It chronicles Dogfish Head Brewery, located in Milton, DE with its brew pub in neighboring Rehoboth Beach, my new fave place and future retirement spot.
    • b) I went to elementary school with Sam Calagione, the owner of Dogfish Head. And my mom was his teacher.
  • I'm working on a list of things I want to do by the time I turn 40. I better hurry up with that.

How embarrassing!!!!

It's been over THREE months since I've blogged. I'd say nothing has happened over the past three months, but that would be a blatant lie!

I only took one class this semester, but it was a toughy. I gave my final presentation on Thursday night and next Thursday is the last class, which I can just be part of the audience for. Wahoo.

Max has been sick. :( The vet thought he had a UTI, but then another vet at the practice called the UTI symptoms a "red herring" for stomach problems. He had to have a scope to look for foreign bodies. Nothing found except for a very inflamed tummy. He's all drugged up now and out of it.

G, my stepdaughter had surgery a month or so ago and my mom had surgery a few months ago.

Meanwhile, I've neglected communication with friends, others & this blog. Time to get back on the blogwagon!

Well hello there, stranger!

So much for blogging everyday about one letter of the alphabet.

So much for November being National Blog Posting Month and some people posting everyday.

So much for changing the "What I'm Reading Now" everytime I pick up a new book. (Although I am updating it now and am excited to get into The Lacuna, Barbara Kingsolver's new book.)

My life has been pretty stressful lately. School. Work. Holidays. I've been bad with keeping in touch with my friends lately, too. Sorry peeps -- you know who you are and you also know how guilty I'm feeling right about now.

HOWEVER...the light at the end of the tunnel is upon me! I've just completed my last assignment for this semester!!!!! Whoo hoo!!!!

I'm sure I'll find some other excuses why I don't blog more frequently, but I'll try not to... See ya 'round.

Whoooooo hoooooo!!!!!!

Check back soon...SOTB will have a new look thanks to my talented friend Amanda!

I'm still alive...

...to my faithful readers (or potentially reader singular at this point), I'm baaack!! This semester is officially over as of 9PM this evening. THANK GOD. Wow, that was tough. My advice to all you kiddos out there is if you know that you want a master's degree and you know what you want it in...do it right away. I've been out of school for 12 years and believe me...I've felt it every single second.

Alas...it's over and I think I did pretty well. Look forward to more blog entries now that I've got a bit more time on my hands!

Potpourri

- Just finished my first written school assignment. I toiled over it for two hours and it was only six sentences long. That's what happens when you haven't been in school for 12 years.

- Red Sox clinced a playoff spot. Yippers.

- I met up with two women that I went to junior high with and hadn't seen in over 20 years and had a BLAST.

- My dog needs a bath. Any volunteers?

- I started Pilates up again. Love/hate relationship there.

It's starting...

::gulp::

My first graduate-level course is tomorrow a.m. Yikes!

I actually feel pretty good about it, though. I downloaded the syllabus (once I FOUND the site to do that at), have my textbook, a notebook & folder, and have done 3/4 of what may or may not be the reading assignment due tomorrow. (The way the syllabus is constructed, it's tough to tell if the assignment is FOR the class it's next to on the sheet or for the NEXT class.)

Where's my pocket protector you ask? I've taken it off and put it next to the shiny apple I'll be bringing to class tomorrow. :)
